Richard Simonds, MSW, BCC
Director of THRIVE Services
Richard Simonds is the Director of THRIVE Services at Family Houston where he has full oversight of Family Houston’s Financial and Employment Programs.
Before coming to Family Houston, Richard worked for a Fortune 500 financial firm where he helped individuals and families accumulate, protect and pass on multigenerational wealth. Richard has spoken locally, regionally and nationally about behavioral change, money management and credit. Richard has been featured in the Houston Chronicle and KHOU. In addition to his full time position at Family Houston, Richard is an Adjunct Professor of Social Work at the University of Houston – Downtown. Richard received his B.A. in Sociology from the University Of Miami (OH) in 2004 before moving to Houston and obtaining a Masters of Social Work from the University of Houston in 2007.
Daniel Scholl, MA
Program Manager of Financial Coaching
Daniel Scholl is Program Manager of Financial Coaching with Family Houston. He coordinates the delivery of services and supervises the Financial Coaching team at Family Houston’s Central Office. Daniel has more than 10 years of experience in banking and financial planning. He has also spoken about personal finance to many groups including: Houston Community College, Lone Star Community College, American Cancer Society, and The Wounded Warrior Project. He has a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Houston and a Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership from Gonzaga University.
Brenda Velasco is a graduate of University of Houston with a Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies. She is a bilingual experienced professional who has worked in a variety of industries using a client-focused approach to financial planning. She accepted the opportunity to join Family Houston as a financial coach to help individuals meet their short-term and long-term financial goals. Brenda plans to combine her business skills and passion for helping others to make a positive change in the community. In her spare time Brenda enjoys her time with her family and at the movies.

Jorge Mendoza, LPC-I
Jorge L. Mendoza is a THRIVE Counselor with Family Houston. He is practicing as a Licensed Professional Counselor-Intern and provides bilingual counseling services from a mixed approach. He has experience providing crisis intervention and working with both individual adults and couples. As a THRIVE Counselor, Jorge assists families and individuals in reaching their financial and personal goals.
THRIVE Counselor/Case Manager
Kathryn Foster is a THRIVE Counselor/Case Manager with Family Houston. She is a Licensed Master Social Worker and received her master’s degree from Texas State University – San Marcos in 2014. Kathryn has previously worked with a variety of ages and more recently in adoption. Kathryn enjoys helping others achieve their goals and is thrilled to continue to serve at Family Houston.
Doug White is a Financial Coach with Family Houston. He has more than nine years working in the financial services industry and with investment products. He has led group discussions regarding personal finance topics such as budgeting, understanding insurance needs, college savings, and many other financial topics. He has worked one-on-one with clients to help plan and achieve their financial goals. He has a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the University of Houston.
Olaguibel graduated from the University of Houston with a Bachelors of Science in Psychology. His interest in human behavior at the individual and organizational level has lead him to pursue a masters degree in industrial organizational psychology. He is currently enrolled at the University of Houston-Clear Lake. His intentions are to be a helpful resource to everyone he encounters. By providing financial education, stability, resources, and support he believes that we are able to confront and solve more serious societal problems at the root and thus prevent pathological patterns.

Monée Cheney, MBA
Monée Cheney is a Thrive Employment Coach with Family Houston serving the Fort Bend County community. She started with Family Houston in 2010 as part of the Financial Stability team. She has 10 years of customer service experience in retail and banking along with seven years of coaching clients at Family Houston through the Ways to Work Car Loans Program, Financial Coaching, and now Employment Coaching. As a Thrive Employment Coach, Monée assist clients one-on-one with tools to meet their career goals as well as facilitate Employment Readiness workshops out in the Fort Bend County community. Monée has a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from University of Houston-Downtown and a Master’s in Business Administration from Texas Woman’s University.

Mariana Monterrubio is an Employment Coach with more than seven years of employment coaching experience. She provides employment coaching at the United Way Thrive Center in the Clear Lake area. Mariana helps clients excel in their goals by coaching them with a holistic approach that will lead them to find gainful employment. She has worked with clients 18 years old and up with diverse backgrounds and educational levels. Mariana holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Management from the University of Phoenix.

Coordinator of Employment Services
Michael Clement is the Coordinator of Employment Services. Michael has been with Family Houston for 14 years and has more than 10 years of experience as a Bilingual Employment Coach. Michael assists THRIVE clients to enter into Vocational Trainings and provides Employment Preparedness trainings to groups enrolled in Vocational Training. Michael has a bachelor’s degree in Anthropology from the State University of New York at Brockport.

Erica Durden is the Financial Coach serving the United Way Bay Area THRIVE Center in the Clear Lake area. Erica has been with Family Houston for two years and brings with her a variety of experience in the nonprofit world. Erica has a background in working with all ages in a variety of settings including case management, foster care and adoption, and mental health. As a THRIVE Financial Coach, she assists families and individuals in reaching their financial and personal goals.
Sonia Reeves is the Employment Coach for Waller County. She has been with Family Houston for five years and has over 10 years of Business Banking experience. She has spoken to several groups in Houston including: Memorial Hermann Cancer Care Society, Houston Community College, Memorial Assistance Ministries, Katy Christian Ministries, Neighborhood Centers and recently West Side Networking Meetings in Waller. Sonia’s passion is to make a difference in individuals lives by providing resources to help them reach their career goals. She is a graduate of Texas State University with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Business Marketing.

Erika Moreno graduated from the University of Houston Downtown in 2010 with a Bachelors of Science in Sociology. Throughout her college and professional career, her goal has always been to help others and give back to her community. She has previously worked with agencies such as The Houston Area Women’s Center, Harris County Social Services and most recently as an elementary school teacher. She is thrilled to have the opportunity to apply the knowledge and expertise she has gained and more importantly continue to follow her passion as a financial coach with Family Houston.

Arminda Lazaro has a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting. After fifteen years in Accounting and Administration she had the desire to change her career path. She has a compassionate heart and enjoys serving people when there is a need. She eagerly accepted the opportunity to work as a Financial Coach with Family Houston.
